How this calculator works
Most flooring is sold by the box with a stated coverage in square feet. Measure the room, add waste, then divide by box coverage.
Irregular rooms should be split into rectangles and added together for a better takeoff.
boxes = ceiling((area Ă— waste) Ă· sq ft per box)
- Add 10% waste for straight installs
- Add 15% for diagonals or lots of cuts
- Acclimate flooring as the manufacturer requires
Frequently asked questions
How much flooring do I need?
Multiply length by width for each area, add them up, then add 10% waste. A 12Ă—15 room is 180 sq ft, or 198 sq ft with 10% waste.
How many boxes of laminate do I need?
Divide the order square footage by the box coverage on the label. If a box covers 20 sq ft and you need 200, buy 10 boxes.
Should I include closets?
Yes if you’re flooring them. Measure closets separately and add to the total before applying waste.
