How this calculator works

Roofers buy shingles by the square - 100 square feet of roof surface. Most asphalt shingles ship 3 bundles per square.

If you measured ground-area footprint, multiply by a pitch factor to approximate slope surface area.

squares = (area × pitch factor × waste) ÷ 100

  • 3 bundles ≈ 1 square for many 3-tab/laminate shingles
  • Steeper pitches need more material than flat area suggests
  • Add starter strip, ridge cap, and underlayment separately

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Find squares (roof sq ft ÷ 100), multiply by bundles per square (usually 3), then add waste. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares, or about 66 bundles with 10% waste.

What is a roofing square?

One square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. It’s the standard ordering unit for shingles and underlayment.

How does roof pitch affect material?

Steeper roofs have more surface area than the building footprint. Pitch factors adjust flat measurements upward so you don’t under-order.
